All About Rock Bags

Limestone-RockAt Impak, we offer custom shopping bags made out of paper, plastic, cotton, jute, linen, and...rocks?

It may sound strange, but it’s true. Our customizable Rock BagsTM (and Rock MailersTM) are almost one-third limestone—the same material used to build the pyramids. Yet they are still flexible, lightweight, luxurious, and earth-friendly.

How They’re Made

Rock Bags are a special type of poly bag. They are made from 30% limestone and 20% recycled LDPE plastic. That means only 50% of the material is new plastic, so compared to a regular poly bag, only half as much virgin poly material is required.

The limestone is added in powder form and mixes evenly with the recycled and virgin poly resins. Besides cutting down on the amount of petroleum-based plastic needed, the limestone enhances the texture of the resulting bags, giving them a more luxurious feel and an appealing matte finish.

Eco-Friendly

The biggest benefit of using Rock Bags is that they have a smaller impact on the environment.

Because only half as much virgin plastic is needed, Rock Bags don’t require as much fossil fuel to manufacture. And unlike many plastic bags, the polymer materials that are used to make Rock Bags are not made from crude oil, but are derived from plentiful and clean natural gas. They’re also made right here in the USA, so they don’t have to be shipped halfway around the world.

Using limestone does more than just cut down on fossil fuel consumption; the natural material also enhances the degradation process. The polymer materials used to make Rock Bags are landfill-degradable (meeting ASTM 5511 protocols). In comparison, compostable plastic bags are only designed to biodegrade in the ideal conditions of a compost pile, and will not break down nearly as quickly as Rock Bags in a landfill (which is where most compostable bags end up).

Another advantage Rock Bags have over other degradable or compostable plastics is that they’re not photodegradable; they don’t automatically break down when exposed to sunlight or heat. That means they last as long as you want them to, and don’t start to degrade until you put them in the ground. It also means that, unlike compostable plastics, Rock Bags are 100% recyclable.

A shopping bag with a luxurious feel and finish; that is completely recyclable, landfill-degradable, and eco-friendly; that is made in America; and can be customized to meet your needs and strengthen your brand image. That’s the Rock Bag. To learn more about how it can help your business grow, feel free to contact us or get a free quote.
